It was recently announced that Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Martin Chase Productions are in pre-production on the seventh film in the American Girl series, "American Girl 2014". This is the current working title of the film.

The award winning casting director, who was formerly the executive vice president of feature castings at Walt Disney Studios, is auditioning actors to fill the lead roles. Additional casting for supporting and day player roles will take place as soon as the main roles are cast. A few of the roles being cast are a 10 year old girl with exceptional ballet skills for the lead role, a 12-15 year old ballet dancer to play the second lead role, and another 10 year old girl. Also up for grabs is the role of an ethnically diverse adult actress between the ages of 24-40, who also has expert level ballet skills. Shooting will take place in May throughout June, 2013.

"American Girl 2014" centers on Blanche Palmer, a lively and energized 10 year-old girl who is very happy and full of life. Blanche has a dream of being a professional ballet dancer, but she has a bit of stage fright when dancing. This performance anxiety prevents her from exhibiting her true amazing talent. Blanche has an older sister Jade who is considered the very best ballet dancer in her school. The two enjoy a close relationship with each other, however Blanche always feels like she is living and performing in the shadow of her sister’s talent. To complicate her life even more, Blanche has a competitor named Renata who is the same age and dances with perfection since her parents hired a private coach. Renata is very pretty and very testy, and she criticizes Blanche for small mistakes in her performances. Jackie Sanchez, a recently retired world class ballerina, then becomes a role model for Blanche and her sister.
Details on how talent can submit for the 'American Girl 2014' feature film ballet dancers, and registration information for extras can be found on the following website:

No guesses needed on who the 2014 Girl of the Year will be - it's Blanche! Now, we can wonder on her looks . . . will it be decided by the actress/dancer getting the role? or will she have her looks altered to become Blanche . . . certainly other actresses were re-done to look like Samantha, Felicity and Kit to name a few.
It's going to be fun to learn more!

Below is a re-print of a 1/22/13 article from The New York Times, by Corey Kilgannon - it's magical and worth your time!

"After one visit, she returned with her hair in dreadlocks. Another time, her long blond locks were primly fashioned into a traditional bun. One day, she came back wearing a uniform of the exclusive all-girls Brearley School on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

These have been the many phases of Kirsten Larson, an American Girl Doll who sat on a shelf in the Ottendorfer branch of the New York Public Library, in the East Village, until a resouceful children's librarian began lending her to girls, many of whose parents, because of financial or feminist reasons, resist buying the dolls.

Kirsten - who retails for $110 and is marketed as a "pioneer girl of strength and spirit" leading an adventurous life in the mid-1800s- was dropped off a decade ago at the library branch, in a Gothic building on Second Avenue.

She could not have been more out of her element, in her homespun frock and bonnet, in the middle of a New York City neightborhood once known for punk rock, left-wing activism and on-the-edge art and fashion, and now for its rapid gentrification.

But Kirsten has adapted to her urban frontier, traveling from one girl's home to another's for two weeks at a time, spending nights inside cramped apartments in public housing projects and inside luxery high-rises with sweeping city views. She also has taken trips out of the neighborhood with her temporary guardians: boat rides on Oyster Bay, and to house parties held by Mexican immigrants in Harlem.

The doll, part of a brand that is all the rage among girls and whose price tag is rage-inducing to many parents, has become one of the most sought-after items at the library. For some girls, Kirsten was the only way they could afford such a luxury item in their home. For others, it was the only way their liberal-minded parents would allow any doll into their home, refusing to indulge in gender stereotypes or what they considered to be an elitist hobby.

Suzette Seepersad had been avoiding buying her daughter Caelyn Osborn, 5, any toys geared toward girls. But Caelyn fell in love with Kirsten, taking her to the family's apartment, bathing her, reading stories to her and putting her to bed.

After keeping the doll for two weeks or so, she had to be reminded by a librarian to return it. Now, Ms. Seepersad said, "I'm trying to get my sister to buy her" an American Girl doll.

With its limited budget, the East Village branch library could hardly be mistaken for the upscale American Girl Place, the company's flagship sore on Fifth Avenue, where reservations are often required for $20-a-head tea parties. But the excitement level, at least, was comparable in the library - and of course, there it was free to take Kirsten home.

The children began adopting Kirsten for days or weeks at a time, the way they would borrow a book. The library system does not typically lend out dolls, so Thea Taube, he children's librarian at the branch, kept it unofficial. She did not require names or library cards from borrowers but rather relied on the honor system. Some children kept the doll for several weeks, she said.

Now after dozens of trips over the years, Kirsten is worn out and is being shipped to the company's doll hospital in Middleton, Wis., to have her loosened arm and leg joints fixed and her hair, which has become matted from being styled and restyled countless times, replaced.

She will receive a new wardrobe and accessories, since Kirsten's boots, apron, knit stockings and bonnet - everything but her dress - have all been long lost, something that Ms. Taube said was a result of "a lot of love over the years."

A group of Kirsten's other favorite caretakers gathered recently at the library for a going away party, drawing get-well cards and relishing one last play-date with the doll.

There was Flora Sobrino, 11, who now has three American Girl dolls of her own. There was Alondra Salas, 6, who could not afford such a doll, and whose mother, a nanny for an East Village family, knitted Kirsten's outfit at their modest apartment in Harlem.

There was Khadija Sankara, 6, from the Bronx, who asked her mother - a Senegalese immigrant who runs a T-shirt shop nearby - for an American Girl doll.

"She wanted one, but her older sister told me: "You know how much it costs? As much as an iPod or something," the mother, Theresa Sankara, recalled.

There was Alison Newmark, 3, who would sleep with Kirsten and show her off to neighbors in the lobby of her building.

"I would not buy it for her now because it's very expensive, but she thought it was the most beautiful dolll she ever saw," said her mother, Julio Justo. "It was almost like a real person to her - like a friend."

Despite all the adoration she has received, Kirsten was not an overnight sensation at the library. When Ms. Taube became the children's librarian in 2004, she found Kirsten languishing on a forgotten shelf in a library office within earshot of the busy children's room, because library workers considered her too expensive to risk damage by displaying.

Kirsten had been donated a year earliet by the American Girl company when it opened its flagship Manhattan store and gave dolls and their biographical books to city library branches.

"I thought, "Well, we loan out books that are expensive, so why can't we lend her out too?" said Ms Taube, who hoped the doll would attract more children to the branch, leading them to read the doll books.

Ms. Taube began displaying Kirsten on her desk, with no sign or label or explanation. Immediately there were shy inquiries.

"If I saw a girl admiring it, I'd say,'Do you know you can take her home?'" Ms. Taube said. "She likes to take trips and visit other dolls."

New York libray officials said they knew of no other doll-lending in their system.

Flora, a sixth grader at Brearley who dressed Kirsten in her school's uniform, began borrrowing Kirsten five years ago, taking her home to her apartment on St. Mark's Place, and began writing homemade books with adventure stories featuring Kirsten.

She took Kirsten to playgrounds and Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with her parents, who deemed Kirsten too extravagant. At one point, Flora misplaced the doll's apron, but later found it and returned it along with a pair of underwear she bought for Kirsten with her own money.

"When Flora was 6 we told her, 'It's a very expensive doll," Ms. Sobrino said. "We weren't considering buying her a $100 doll."

We were hoping that borrowing Kirsten might quench her desire for her own doll, but actually, I think it may have turned out to be a gateway doll," she said.

Flora saved her allowance money for a year and bought herself two dolls and received another as a gift. Now the dolls are watching Flora grow too old to play with them.

As the library prepared to close, Kirsten's farewell party was coming to an end. The children hugged and said goodbye to the little well-worn pioneer and put her in a box bound for Wisconsin. Ms. Taube told the girls they would celebrate together when the doll returned in several weeks.

Ms. Taube said Kirsten exemplified the library as a community center that offered diverse services and lending materials. "I tell the kids that the library belongs to them," she said. "And I think that any child who could not afford that doll will remember the time they were able to borrow it from the library."

The BIG question this time of year is: "Will I get my order in time?"

The answer from DollCloset.com is YES . . . if:

** You shop early enough so that your order can be prepared
(unlike many companies, are outfits are placed on hangers and many of our items are pressed before they leave us),

** Then packed carefully (as repeat customers can tell you - we do a super careful job),

** Mailed Priority or shipped FedEx Ground.

We try to use Priority Mail as much as possible as we have found them to be very dependable and reasonable in cost . . . However they DO have size restrictions of one cubic foot. Thus, larger items, such as many Dolls, must go FedEx Ground (but ONLY until December 15, 2012).

During our past years of serving you at Christmas time, we have learned that the Post Office and FedEx DO have capacity limits!

Your standard delivery packages MUST be in transit by December 17th which means we need the order by midnight, PST, December 12th.
You don't need more stress wondering if your gifts will arrive in time!

The Post Office can get so bogged down due to volume and weather that many times containers and containers of Priority Mail packages are stored at an airport and don't even begin on the journey until after Christmas!

After a certain point, all the Post Office can work on is the Express Mail . . . and the same applies to us at DollCloset.com

That is why we urge you to use Express Mail if you order after December 12th and NEED delivery by Christmas.

NOTE: Final Date for Christmas Delivery Orders by Express Mail is Midnight PST December 20, 2012

Best wishes for a delightful Holiday Season!

September is bringing us many new items from the Favorite Friend 18 inch Doll Collection . . . such as the brunette cutie shown above, Hanging with Friends! She has blue eyes and long brunette hairdo with bangs (rooted not a wig). All Favorite Friend dolls are 18" tall, have jointed shoulders, neck and hips; open and close eyes; vinyl extending to mid chest (for lower necklines) and a soft middle. Best of all they can share clothes and shoes with American Girl Dolls but at a fraction of the cost.

Another doll coming in September is also blue eyed but with long blonde hair - Pink Glamour Doll! Notice her pink fuzzy jacket worn over a striped tee - and her short denim skirt. Pretty pink bows accent her hairdo.

There will be one more new Favorite Friends doll in October - she is called Autumn Mist and replaces the ethnic dolls "First Day Of School" and "Oh So Groovy Doll". we still have both of these dolls but they have been discontinued so that we can no longer replace them - once they are gone, that's it!

We are also expecting some new 18" Favorite Friend doll outfits in September - four in total. Above you can see the cute Girlz Best Friend - a fun outfit for any 18" doll!

Here's a six point checklist to help you decide:

A. How old is the child?
The first American Girl dolls were marketed specifically for girls 8 years and older to meet a need that wasn't being filled at that time i.e. quality playdolls for older girls. Today the 18 inch American Girl dolls are still recommended for ages 8 and up. In fact the dolls represent girls said to be 8, 9 and 10 years old.

(Note: That is why American Girl does not offer Brownie outfits for younger girls - at one time they did have Intermediate Girl Scout uniforms)

We realize that the dolls are given to girls much younger than 8, but unless she meets some of the other points discussed below, you may be better off giving her a less expensive doll such as one of the 18 inch Favorite Friends Dolls by Madame Alexander. The very inexpensive dolls found at stores such as Target and Toys-R-Us may NOT be viable substitutes as they may not be as huggable, poseable or as sturdy (especially the hair!)

A very young child may do better with a good 14" baby doll by Corolle or Gotz or perhaps the 14 inch Corolle Toddler dolls - one is pictured below. All of these dolls have eyes that open and close; in addition many have hair for her to brush and style. Doll clothing for different doll sizes are also available.
(Note: The Corolle Doll Company recommends that dolls be easy to carry by the child)

B. Is the child reading books yet?

If your child is reading her own books, she may well be especially thrilled with the combination of a doll with her own stories as those that come with the Historical American Girl Dolls and the American Girl Doll of the Year. The stories add a welcome dimension, and sometimes totally new experiences, to the life of the girl and her doll. The books may encourage your girl to read these stories and even others. Although the books are available without the American Girl Dolls the combination is especially entancing to many girls.

C. Do her friends have American Girl or Favorite Friend dolls?

"Playing Dolls" is a wonderful role playing activity for girls and their friends as they stretch their imaginations and learn about many situations in their play. If her friends have American Girl or Favorite Friend dolls, the play is even more thrilling when she has one too - they can easily exchange clothes and have many adventures. Playing with one's peers at the same level is important at any age.

D. Has she asked for a specific American Girl Doll?

Has she asked for Cecile? or Kit? or McKenna? If so, she has already bonded with that doll! Switching her from that doll to another with a happy end result may be very difficult. The American Girl dolls have specific personalities and characteristics that may metter to the older child. If it's just physical characteristics such as the long blonde hair you may be able to easily substitue the "Monkey Love" Favorite Friend doll shown below by Madame Alexander for Julie from American Girl. If it is a specific outfit she likes . . . American Girl doll clothing fits the Favorite Friend Dolls by Madame Alexander.

(Do you remember how you or one of your childhood friends felt when you didn't get something you had your heart set on? It's not impossible to switch her alliegence to another doll . . . but if you don't gauge it correctly she may end up with a doll she never plays with and/or disappointing memories that last for many years)

E. Does she know how to care for dolls?

If all of her dolls have been treated carelessly she may need to hear that she is not ready for an American Girl dolls until her dolls are better treated. Learning how to care for dolls is an important life lesson and should be rewarded whenever possible by receiving a doll she really wants, even an American Girl doll. Depending on her age, give her a doll with the understanding that if she learns to treat a doll carefully, then she will be ready for an American Girl doll.

F. Are American Girl Dolls quality products?

American Girl Dolls were originally made by the Gotz Doll Company - a premier doll manufacturer in Germany. They made some custom changes in the doll that Pleasant Company ordered (the founding American Girl doll company)The Gotz Doll Company now produces dolls the same size as American Girl dolls but they are available in the USA on a limited basis.

Things to look for in a well made play doll and in American Girl Dolls:

1. Dolls are poseable with joints at the shoulder and hip at the minimum. Some 18 inch dolls have no shoulder joint so that the ars flop and the cloth portion of the doll extends almost to the elbow and the knee. This rules out many types of outfits such as shorts and sleeveless tops plus makes it harder to position and play with the dolls.
(Note: American Girl, Favorite Friends and Gotz Dolls meet this criteria)

2. Hair Care - The Favorite Friend dolls by Madame Alexander and the Gotz dolls have rooted hair which is essentially a better choice. American Girl dolls have wigs - a change originally made to lower the cost to produce the American Girl doll. If the hair becomes really, really bad, the wig can be removed and a new wig glued on - preferrably by an expert! That is not an option for rooted hair dolls plus they do not have as many style selections but generally rooted hair lasts longer.

3. Body Size - American Girl dolls have numerous clothing choices through the American Girl Doll company - and through the many companies making clothes to fit her. The good news is that the same American Girl clothes also fit Favorite Friend and Gotz dolls. You will not have trouble mixing and matching outfits!

Magic Attic dolls were a lovely 18" doll option in the 1990's BUT because they were all vinyl and very slender, they needed a totally different size of clothing and shoes. This drastically reduced the possibilities for sharing and is probably why the demand was limited. Eventually the company disappeared.

4. Doll Repair - American Girl and Madame Alexander have maintained Doll Hospitals for many years. They do excellent work because of their training and access to necessary parts. Both have directions for sending dolls for repair on their websites.
Unfortunately in most parts of the USA it is next to impossible to find local doll repair shops that do good work on play dolls.

In conclusion, a strong case can be made for purchasing an American Girl Doll depending on the girl's age, her desire for the doll and her readiness to care for the doll. It is true that the dolls are not inexpensive, but fortunately we now have a quality and less expensive alternative with the Favorite Friend dolls by Madame Alexander. Either of these dolls are very special and can be a valuable way to keep your child a young girl for a few years longer.

Summer Time means lots of things to us . . . including Beach Time as shown by the doll pictured above!
Dolls and Girls need to dress for fun and games . . . and we have many new summer outfits for her dolls including for Medium Baby Dolls such as the twins pictured below in Summer Play Clothes.

In addition to Doll Play, there are wonderful Doll places to visit on vacation. Of course, there are the American Girl Places but there is also a wonderful Madame Alexander Doll Heritage Gallery exhibit at her original factory site in New York City.

There you can see 600 plus original Madame Alexander dolls from the 1920's to the present.

Other Gallery highlights include prototypes that were never manufactured, select dolls from Madame's famed First Ladies series, and limited editions of dolls produced for the Madame Alexander Doll Club throughout the years. Also on view is doll making equipment for live demonstrations, as well as wax sculpt prototypes and samples of doll assembly that reveal more about the doll making process.
Check out the link at the Madame Alexander website for available hours and days. I have heard nothing but praise about the Gallery and can't wait to go myself! Below is an example of one of her dolls, 16 inch Beth from Little Women, produced in the USA in the 1990's:

DollCloset is also planning several fun features for this summer such as:

* 20% Customer Discounts every Thursday on orders over $25.00

* Weekly Super Specials of dolls, doll clothing and accessories reduced 40% off the usual cost!
Please note that these items are reduced even further on Thursdays . . . minimum $25.00 purchase

* Plus the return of our Summer Activity Sales . . . on June 20, 2012 the official start of Summer!

Our Summer Activity Sale includes many, many ideas for those times when you hear moans "I don't have anything to do!"

We feature reduced prices in the categories of Art & Crafts, Cooking, Dress-Up, Games, Pretend Play and Reading.

We've already started gathering some new items such as the Treasure Totes for many of the Historical American Girl Dolls.

Unfortunately we don't have anything yet for the new Historical Doll coming this fall - her name is Caroline Abbott and apparently she is from the time of the War of 1812 . . . let us know if you hear more please!

Don't miss the fun craft kits too - such as the Doll Travel Kit from American Girl.
It's pictured below and sure to be fun with her doll's own Passport and Travel Bag along with other goodies!

Welcome to Millie's Doll Treasures!

There comes a time in every doll lover's life when the dolls outgrow our space for them!

That has happened to Millie . . . what to do, what to do?

First, we tried doll donations and we've been named Guardian Angel by Kids Wish Network in 2011 and 2012 . . . but more dolls remain.
So Millie decided to share them with YOU at very reasonable prices!

Initially the dolls are from Millie's collection and also ones bought for her own daughter when she was a child.

The Sound of Music, Maria, doll shown above is one of those - and could be part of a set including daughters Liesl and Louisa.

It's intersting that Maria is a 14" girl doll, while the two daughters were fashioned from the Cissette model ie they have jointed knees and wear high heels! They are 10.5 inches tall.

NOTE: All three of the Sound of Music dolls were Made in the USA at the Madame Alexander Doll headquarters in New York City - another coup!

We also have several Mint, Never Removed from Box (NRFB) such as the Cabbage Patch Olympikid Doll shown above.
These Special Edition Dolls were Official Team Mascots for the 1996 Olympics - ours is dressed as a cute Tennis Player.

Another NRFB doll is a Ginny doll produced during her spell with Dakin (yes, the Garfield Toy Company!) called Ginny's Claim.
She was the souvenir doll given to attendees at the Modern Doll Convention held in 1988 in California. Because the event was held in Northern California, Dakin decided that the theme would be the Gold Rush - thus Ginny's outfit complete with patched denim pants and a mining pan! Check out the picture of her sweet face below:

You really need to check out the page at Millie's Doll Treasures in order to see the other unique dolls available. There are three retired fashion doll depicting actual models such as Christie Brinkley and Betsy Johnson - all NRFB.

And, for a bit of REAL San Francisco, check out the two dolls hand dressed by Nicole, a woman in her downtown shop. Her tiny store was amazing to anyone who appreciated lovely dolls! It was located on a busy street with windows on the sidewalk so passers could watch her create - and stop in to buy her dolls! We have two - one we named "Elegant in Black" is shown below:

The following article was taken from "DOLL NEWS" issue 318.
It was written by Chiara Atik and has some great insights - see what you think!

WHAT YOUR AMERICAN GIRL DOLL SAYS ABOUT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

Samantha Parkington:

Did you know, when you picked her out, that Samantha was the cool one? Or were you simply drawn to her glossy brown hair, sophisticated accessories (she had a fur muff!) and rich demographic. Either way, every girl wanted a Samantha. If you owned her, you quickly learned the value of cachet.

By virtue of aquiring a status symbol early on (a Samantha doll was the designer jeans of third grade), you never quite had to worry about things the way other girls did. You therefore grew up to be confident, capable and nonplussed. You've always been well liked. You aren't the funniest in your group, but you've never really noticed or cared. If you thought about it, you could probably recognize other women who had Samanthas. But that's not impressive: everybody can.

Molly McIntire:

If you had Molly, you probably wanted Samantha instead, but contented yourself with Molly because you too wore glasses, liked books, were bad at math, and would concoct various schemes to get attention. (Oh, Molly.) If you were a Molly, and had a Molly (as oposed to being a Molly and aspirationally owning a Felicity), you were imbued, then and now, with a immutable sense of self. At least Molly could tap dance, which is frankly more talent than any of the other girls exhibited.

As an adult, you've developed a carefully honed aptitude for sarcasm. You've gotten contacts, and a slightly edgy haircut. You still sort of want attention, but you deny it. You've thought back on your American Girl Doll, and tried not to be too resentful towards the person who gave her to you, who so obviously associated you with the descriptor "mousy".

Kirsten Larson:

You probably got Kirsten because she was blond, or because you read a lot of "Little House on the Prairie" books. (It definitely wasn't because of her "St. Lucia Christmas Outfit" . . . yikes!)

Whatever superficial motivation led you to choose Kirsten, you quickly learned that life as a Swedish immigrant in Minnesota is not all lingonberry pie and ice fishing. Not halfway through the first book does Kirsten's best friend Marta die suddenly and tragically of cholera. This was shocking and horrifying. Obviously, you were used to cholera deaths (this being the age of Oregon Trail), but this time it was different.

You therefore grew up to be a bit more thoughtful, a bit more reserved than your peers. You also find yourseelf inexplicably drawn towards crafts like knitting, jam-making and quilting. You secretly suspect that you'd manage just fine in a post-Apocalyptic setting should things come to that. You were surprised and delighted to see some of Kirsten's outfits come back into style in certain enclaves of Brooklyn.

Felicity Merriman:

You had Felicity because of one or more of the following reasons:
A) you had red hair
B) You thought she had the prettiest clothes and accessories.
C) Fewer people had Felicity, and you wanted to be unique.
D) You actually wanted Samantha but your mom thought Samantha's dress looked like the top of a peanut butter jar so you got Felicity instead. (Just me? OK.)

You grew up to have an affinity for lovely things, a possible inflated sense of your own uniqueness, a teensy hint of self-righteousness (remember how she refused tea when they raised the tea tax? "Thank you, I shall take no tea!"), and latent familiarity with Colonial Wiliamsburg.

Addy Walker:

If you were black, you had Addy because your parents were trying to encourage positive self-esteem in a market saturated with white dolls. If you were any other minority, you had Addy because your parents were trying to encourage positive self-esteem in a market saturated with white dolls. If you were white, and had Addy, it was becaause your progressive parents were trying to encourage broad world-views in a market saturated with white dolls.

Though arguably the most likeable of all the characters, Addy is more of a racial totem than personality - or era-driven doll. Her story doesn't exactly provoke a nostalgia for slavery, and her accessory was, no kidding, a gourd. (The significance is obvious - how little girls would make their dolls play with the gourd is not.)

Girls who had Addy grew up with an acute sense of the lack of diversity in early-'90s consumer culture.

No American Girl Doll:
Your parents wouldn't buy you an American Girl doll because $80 is a ridiculous price to pay for a toy, which would then inevitably lead to the purchase of multiple accessories ranging from the overpriced ($18 for "Winter Accessories," consisting of doll mittens and a hat), to the exorbitant ($56 for an "Ice Cream Set," consisting of tiny plastic scoops of ice cream), to the highway robbery ($349 for a doll's chest," a.k.a. a tiny wooden box.).

You grew up to be financially independent, level-headed, unspoiled, and still just a little bit resentful whenever you walk by American Girl Place.
Dolls want pets - just like their owners! DollCloset.com started showing our dolls with dogs and other animals years ago . . . and now we're very happy to add the pretty puppy above called Petite Puppy - isn't she adorable?

We have other very popular dogs such as Doxie, a very wise and thoughtful dog, shown with one of our doll models in her Red Plaid Shirt Set below:

Our most popular dog to date is our adorable Yorkie, Yippy. She is 7 inches, wears a bow in her hair and is found with many of our doll models such as the new Pink in the Spring Outfit.

Baby Dolls like dogs too as can be seen in the picture below of our Bitty Twin model in his Blue Sweater and Pant Set!

Not all dolls want a dog - so we have a new selection of kittens coming - you should be able to see them on this Teddy Bear and Other Plush Toys page after St. Patrick's Day. In the meantime, here's our Kirsten doll wearing her pink checked party dress AND showing off her bunny and duck!
